Japani Shyam is the young and talented
daughter of the famous Gond artist, Jangarh Singh Shyam. Born in 1988, she has
had many shows and attended workshops throughout the country. She has imbibed
the use of colour and form from her father and continues to experiment with and
express it in her creations. Her world is inhabited by animals and rituals, and she
integrates nature through forests which these animals dwell in. She, in turn, has taken the visual from the traditional to the
contemporary and continues to experiment with the narrative, making it more suitable
for the modern world. In 1999, aged eleven, she was
awarded the Kamala Devi Award in recognition of her talent. She also received
the YFLO award for the year 2017-2018. In 2022 she was also given the Raja Ravi
Varma achievement award by the Delhi Police.
