SITA
Revisiting the Woman, and the Goddess
Sita, for me, is the most
fascinating and probably the most unexplored female character in Hindu
mythology. Contrary to the common perception of a mild, submissive,
self-sacrificing woman, is the strong, fearless and independent individual who
chooses her destiny and challenges norms and customs and circumstances at every
step. This series, is my exploration of that aspect of the feminine that I can
respect and love and aspire to.
Born in 1971, Roohan finished her Bachelor's in Fine Arts from the College of Art, Chandigarh in 1993. She has been working in the field of Design, Art and Education for over 30 years. She is also teaching as visiting faculty at the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi. Being fond of all things 'art' she also does museum and art walks in the capital along with workshops on art and craft with children. Her favoured medium is paper collages made from recycled magazine paper, which she believes constitutes "found objects" as one is working within the confines of colours and textures already available. The challenge is to create something new with what exists. The joy, according to her, lies in magically transforming the colours and shapes into a totally different visual experience as the pieces come together to create a new, unique expression.
