Nature offers us pictorial
and aesthetic beauty as images and ideas. Artist Ganga Singh adds to it -
elements of abstraction, distortion and simplification to create an alternative
world and life where the physical and mystical co-inhabit. ‘My paintings are
based on my response to nature. They are modern designs with a strong primitive
and tribal influence.
In this exhibition one can
see his depictions of mystical landscapes and mythical creatures. The visuals
transport us to tales and stories from our childhood of fabulous forts and
mystical creatures that seem both real and magical at the same time. The colour
schemes add to the sense of theatrics. In short, the works are engaging like
good storytelling and dramatic like a performance.
Ganga Singh is an emerging
artist from Rajasthan. He has earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from M S
University Baroda and studied MFA from College of Art New Delhi. His interest
in art was fostered by his family, especially his father, who had to give up art
in order to pursue agriculture. Coming from a region where miniature art of
Kota uses the Chambal Valley in hunting scenes, one can probably see Ganga
Singh’s paintings originating from a certain thematic tradition which combines
his own bold interpretation of the theme. His images carry a mix of drama and
energy. This drama also comes from the bold folk forms that influence his
space.
