Printmaking as an art form
The fine print is an ‘original in multiples’. Originality is generally associated with
uniqueness, but a print is also original because the artist creates each print
individually, albeit from a single block or plate. When a drawing is translated
into a woodcut or engraving, it takes on totally new characteristics. The
metamorphosis that takes place in the journey from drawing to ‘print’ becomes the strongest attraction
for the creative artist.
Each technique, be it woodcut, lithograph, etching,
etc., has its own distinctive style, imposed by the tools, materials and
printmaking methods. Thus any of the proofs printed from an original plate is
considered an original work of art. Although most prints are ‘pulled’ in limited quantities, the
number has no bearing on the originality, only on commercial value.
Since fine prints are made in multiples, they become
affordable but are still original and
works of art in their own right.
